Project Description

Sound Curating is a research cluster initiated and led by Lanfranco Aceti and Morten Søndergaard. This is a research group that has already spearheaded several international events, most recently the Sound Curating seminar at ZKM, and the Sound Art Curating conference at Goldsmiths College and the Courtauld Institute. The research theme focuses on the role that sound, and art sounds in particular, play in contemporary art and culture. As if it were a minor Muse, sound has become in some cases, in an era of increased visuality, a ‘supporting actor’ in the art world. What is instead the reality of sound in connection with cultural and aesthetic representations? What are the challenges in curating and representing sound on the printed page? Is the visuality of sound technically limited and aesthetically partial?

The loss of sound is permanent, non reproducible and fort this reason total. In an era of perhaps curatorial and archival overdrive, why sound appears to be sidelined?

These are some of the questions that the seminars, conference and exhibitions will ask and respond to by producing a series of future outcomes.
